Iberdrola signs biggest wind power deal yet
As many as 90,000 homes in the South could soon be powered by the wind.
Portland-based
Iberdrola Renewables announced a deal Thursday to provide the Tennessee Valley Authority with 300 megawatts of wind power annually, enough to power between 67,500 and 90,000 homes.
It’s the largest deal yet for Iberdrola, one of the world’s largest providers of wind power.
The power will come from a wind farm under construction south of Chicago that is expected to be completed this spring.
The Tennessee Valley Authority plans to add 2,000 megawatts of clean energy to its power mix. It serves seven southeastern states.
Nationwide, Iberdrola’s wind farms can produce 3,500 megawatts of power annually, enough to power as many as 1 million homes.
Globally, it’s part of Spain-based Iberdrola Renovables, which operates more than 10,000 megawatts of wind power in 23 countries.
