Portland gets $23.2 million for streetcar project
The city of Portland will receive $23.2 million to improve streetcar service in the South Waterfront area.
The money will pay for roughly half of a $66.5 million project to reconstruct Southwest Moody Avenue. The project will elevate the roadway by 14 feet to cap contaminated soils. It will include three traffic lanes, dual streetcar tracks and pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The project will introduce infrastructure investment to support future development.
The project was on U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s list of 51 projects to receive $1.5 billion Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) funding.
The U.S. Department of Transportation received more than 1,400 applications from all 50 states, territories and the District of Columbia requesting funding for almost $60 billion worth of projects — 40 times the amount available through the program.
“TIGER grants will tackle the kind of major transportation projects that have been difficult to build under other funding programs,” said LaHood in a statement. “This will help us meet the 21st century challenges of improving the environment, making our communities more livable and enhancing safety, all while creating jobs and growing the economy.”
