Nissan prices the Leaf: $32,780

Nissan North America announced Tuesday that the manufacturer suggested retail price on its new Leaf electric cars will be $32,780. Oregon buyers will receive a $1,500 tax credit on top of a federal tax credit of up to $7,500, potentially bringing the cost down to $23,780.

The cars, which are expected to arrive in Oregon sometime this fall, will have two versions available. The "SV" level will include an advanced navigation system and Internet/smart phone connectivity to the vehicle. The "SL" level adds some additional features, including rear-view monitor, solar panel spoiler, fog lights, and automatic headlights for an additional $940.

Nissan North America is working with eTec and Oregon municipalities on deploying just shy of 1,000 of the Leaf vehicles in the state, along with the charging-station infrastructure to support them.

Greentech Media questions whether Nissan will make money on the Leaf at that price point, calculating that the battery technology used in the car should nudge the price closer to $60,000. Over at Portfolio.com, the adoption of electric vehicles is the question, along with how the Leaf's chances compare to those of General Motors' Volt.

Nissan has announced it will be offering personal, 220-volt charging docks in tandem with the purchase process. The charging stations will be built and installed by AeroVironment.
