SolarWorld gets high marks from toxics coalition

SolarWorld AG said international shipments increased in the first half, thanks to continued growth from the company's Hillsboro-based U.S. operations.

The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition released its 2010 Solar Company Scorecard report this week, highlighting two German solar panel manufacturers — Calyxo and SolarWorld, which has its U.S. headquarters in Hillsboro — as leaders in the industry for their attention to environmental concerns.

SolarWorld scored 88 out of a possible 100 on the scorecard. Calyxo scored 90.

SolarWorld had a strong showing for its product takeback and recycling program as well as its monitoring of the product supply chain. The company's weakest score was in the area of chemical use. SolarWorld products contains trace amounts of lead, which is common across the industry.

SVTC is calling for mandatory takeback and responsible recycling by solar companies to make sure toxic chemicals don't enter the environment.

“The solar industry needs high corporate responsibility standards if it is to fulfill its potential as a truly sustainable industry,” said Seb Beloe in a statement. Beloe is the head of sustainable and responsible investment research at Henderson Global Investors, which sponsored the survey.
