Nike, Hanna Andersson among "sustainability all stars"

Apparel magazine named its top five sustainability all stars on Thursday with two Oregon companies — Nike and Hanna Andersson — on the list.

Beaverton-based Nike, which was nominated by shipping giant Maersk, was recognized for its Considered Design program and ambitious goals to manufacture shoes and apparel be made in a "closed loop" fashion — that is with the fewest possible materials and with the intent to be easily disassembled and recycled at the end of their use.

Portland-based Hanna Andersson, which designs and manufactures children's clothing, was recognized for its eco-friendly corporate headquarters, its use of organic cotton, its recyclable shipping materials and its employee-led sustainability teams.

Hanna Andersson was acquired in 2008 by Sun Capital Partners.

The all stars will be profiled in Apparel's June issue.

In related news, Nike announced Thursday that its new uniforms for the U.S. men's soccer team are the most environmentally friendly in the company's history.
