Schools get funding for efficient lights
Portland Public Schools announced Wednesday that almost $380,000 in federal stimulus funding will be used for energy-efficient fluorescent lighting retrofits at 16 schools and the district office building.
The funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, awarded through the state energy program, is designated for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in public buildings. Three local contractors are performing the work: Sylvania Lighting Services, Stoner Electric and Twice the Light. District officials say the project will be complete by mid-June and will save the district approximately $70,000 in electricity costs per year.
At some schools, installation of new lights is providing an educational opportunity for students.
“With tight budgets and our priority to keep class sizes manageable, money for projects such as this is hard to come by,” said Superintendent Carole Smith in a press release. “We’re thankful for the award and look forward to better lighting for our students and staff and a reduced electric bill for our district.”
