Stahlbush launches biodegradable bag
Stahlbush Island Farms announced it will use a first-of-its-kind biodegradable bag for their frozen fruit and vegetable lines.
Corvallis-based Stahlbush worked with Cadillac Products Packaging Company of Troy, Mich., to develop a bag that would biodegrade in months, instead of the hundreds of years that it takes standard polyethylene plastic packaging to break down.
Stahlbush already used brown kraft paper for its frozen fruit and vegetable lines and the look is still the same, but the companies worked together to find water-based packaging ink and a biodegradable liner that would hold up to a normal freezer shelf life.
"We'd been working on this for about seven years," said Kellie Strawn, marketing and sales associate for Stahlbush. "Now our packaging is truly as green as it looks."
Strawn said Stahlbush and Cadillac Products will share their experiences and processes of their so-called BioBag with other companies in the industry looking for an environmentally friendly option.
