Navistar is taking the wraps off its electric fleet trucks Tuesday, inviting business owners and local politicians to come test drive the vehicles, named the eStar, through a course set up inside the Portland Convention Center.

Navistar bought the manufacturing assets of Monaco Coach of Coburg last year for $52 million and is manufacturing its new line of electric trucks at a former Monaco plant in Indiana.

"We’re excited to debut the eStar in Portland and give local media and government officials an up-close look at one of the coolest, most environmentally friendly commercial trucks on the road today,” said Jim Hebe, Navistar senior vice president and North American sales operations, said in a press release. “As one of the most sustainable cities in the nation, a city like Portland can appreciate the amazing potential of the eStar all-electric truck when it comes to clean, energy-efficient transportation.”

Federal Express has been an early adopter of the trucks, trying them out in some urban routes.

The trucks cost about $150,000 before state and federal tax incentives.

More details about the truck and the launch event are available via the Navistar website.
