SunPower to start joint venture in Taiwan
SunPower Corp. will set up a joint venture with a Taiwanese technology company to run a factory making solar cells.
AU Optronics Corp., based in Hsinchu, in northwest Taiwan, makes thin-film transistor liquid-crystal displays. The two companies have signed a definitive agreement to create the joint venture, which will own and run the factory, called Fab 3, which is being built in Malaysia.
SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWRA) and AU Optronics (NYSE: AUO) will give equal amounts of money and will own the joint venture equally.
Kuen-Yao Lee is chairman of AU Optronics. SunPower is based in San Jose. SunPower's Northwest regional office is in Portland.
