Eleek, Sustainable Harvest named top social entrepreneurs
A second-annual list of America's most promising social entrepreneurs by Bloomberg Businessweek magazine featured two Portland companies: Eleek and Sustainable Harvest.
Businessweek defines a social enterprise as "a sustainable business that creates social or environmental value alongside profit."
Eleek, which manufactures home fixtures such as sinks and lighting out of scrap metal and discarded building materials, was recognized last year by the Portland Business Journal's manufacturing awards.
Sustainable Harvest, a coffee importer that specializes in building relationships with coffee farmers, earlier this year joined Portland State University's Social Innovation Incubator to develop programs to help growers in Mexico and Tanzania.
The magazine is soliciting readers to vote for their favorite social business and will announce winners on June 29.
