Freightliner dealer gives green rig to PCC

Daimler Trucks North America LLC has given Portland Community College students the chance to work on a new fuel-efficient rig.

The company, through its Daimler-Freightliner division, gave PCC a $125,000 fuel-efficient truck for use by students in the Diesel Service Technology Program. The course is taught at the school’s Rock Creek campus.

The truck, a new Cascadia Freightliner Class 8 truck, emits 1/68th the amount of pollution emitted by trucks built before 1998.

Students will dissect the rig as they learn about the industry’s latest green technologies. McCoy Freightliner, a company dealer, made the donation.

“Technology is changing so fast, it’s hard to keep training up to pace without these sorts of donations,” said Russ Dunnington, PCC’s diesel service instructor and program chair.

Diesel service technicians repair and maintain diesel engines and component support systems. PCC’s 17,000-square-foot Rock Creek shop has more than 50 diesel engines, 12 of which are computer controlled.

Daimler-Freightliner invested $450 million in the Cascadia series of trucks. The engine alone required more than $1 billion in research and development.
