Oregon vets get $500,000 for green training

The U.S. Department of Labor has directed $500,000 to six Oregon counties that will help train veterans to perform green jobs.

The Labor Department’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service issued the money as part of $9 million it delivered to 22 communities. The money will train more than 4,000 veterans.

Community Solutions for Clackamas County will oversee the Portland-area portion. The grant will train veterans in Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, Marion, Polk and Yamhill counties.

The money will give veterans skills assessments, individual job counseling, labor market information and classroom or on-the-job training for green jobs.

“This federal funding will make a difference for Oregon veterans,” said Rep. Earl Blumenauer, a Portland Democrat, in a statement. “They have served our country abroad, and now, they can serve again at home by changing the way our community uses and burns energy.”
