Portland vocational school wins grant for environmental education

Tom McKenna, a teacher at Portland YouthBuilders, received a $4,000 grant to develop a class on the politics of food from the National Environmental Education Foundation and The Weather Channel.

The award, one of 10 given nationwide as part of the "Classroom Earth" project, will go toward the program McKenna plans to teach about the design, construction and management of a garden to serve as a living classroom. It will supplement lessons on the history and evolution of agriculture, methods of sustainability, and the impact of globalization on food consumption, poverty and environmental degradation.

Portland YouthBuilders is an alternative high school and vocational program that teaches students green construction practices and provides computer training.

Classroom Earth is a project of the National Environmental Education Foundation with financial support from The Weather Channel. It is aimed at strengthening environmental education.

The grants support classes offered in the 2010-11 school year.
