A lot with 54 covered bike parking spots will open Friday at the Doubletree Hotel Portland near the Lloyd Center MAX stop, giving two-wheeled commuters a new option.
The bike corral was designed in partnership with the hotel, the Lloyd Transportation Management Association and a five-member project team from the Portland Business Alliance's Leadership Portland program.
The Lloyd TMA donated 27 racks, which can accommodated 54 bikes, for the project to the Doubletree, which installed them in an area formerly used for car parking and will make the bike lot available to the public.
"Our goal is to increase the number of cyclists in the Lloyd District by 66 percent by 2015," said Heather McCarey, project coordinator for the Lloyd TMA, in a news release. "Those additional riders will need secure parking, and the Doubletree project will help us meet that demand."
The Doubletree eliminated its airport shuttle, a standard hotel service, several years ago to promote the MAX light rail option for guests, and it offers a 50 percent parking discount to guests driving an electric or hybrid vehicle.
