Portland General Electric announced Thursday that the third and final build-out phase of its $1 billion Biglow Canyon Wind Farm will likely be completed by the third quarter.

The first turbines of the final phase — 24 of the 76 planned — have started generating electricity.

Biglow Canyon, PGE's first fully owned wind power development, began producing power in 2007. When the final phase is complete the installed capacity will reach 450 megawatts. Given the variability of wind power, the plant is expected to produce an average of around 150 megawatts — enough to power about 125,000 homes.

"Bringing the first turbines of the final phase of Biglow Canyon Wind Farm online represents a big step in developing more renewable energy resources for our customers and for the growing wind energy development in the region," said Jim Piro, PGE president and CEO, in a press release.

The Biglow Canyon Wind Farm is located near Wasco in Sherman County. Fully built out, it will be one of the largest wind farms in the Northwest.

The wind farm was developed by Orion Energy LLC.
