Iberdrola Renovables announced Friday that it increased its wind energy generation in the United States by 31.7 percent between April and June to reach 2,962 million kilowatt hours — a record for what Bloomberg New Energy Finance has ranked the world's largest wind company.
Iberdrola Renovables, based in Valencia, Spain, is the parent company to Iberdrola Renewables, which has its headquarters in Portland.
Iberdrola has 41 wind farms in the United States with an installed capacity of 3,877 megwatts, enough to power close to 1 million average U.S. households.
The company's worldwide output was 12.8 billion kilowatt hours in the first half of 2010, up 21.5 percent over the same period in 2009.
Iberdrola Renovables has wind farms in 12 countries.
In addition, Iberdrola Renovables runs small-scale hydroelectric plants in Spain that generated 259 million killowatt hours in the second quarter of the year.
The company reports that a significant part of its growth is in the United States, due in part to the favorable regulatory environment. To date, Iberdrola has landed $577 million in grants from the federal government for renewable energy projects here.
