Nike, NASA, USAID and the feds team on sustainability

Nike Inc. has joined forces with the U.S. Agency for International Development, NASA and the U.S. Department of State to seek creative answers to a range of sustainability challenges.

Called LAUNCH, the new program will consist of a series of events and a website, called InnoCentive, to solicit input about ways to address water, health, energy and air quality problems.

The first topic, health, is underway. Anyone with ideas on how to improve the health of people in the first 20 years of life — especially in regard to nutrition, physical exercise and preventative health care — has until Sept. 13 to submit a proposal via the Web.

The winning proposals will be selected by LAUNCH organizers, and the individuals behind the ideas will be invited to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida Oct. 30-31 to participate in the program's health forum.

"USAID is excited to team up with NASA, NIKE and the Department of State for this unique forum," said Alex Dehgan, director of USAID's Office of Science and Technology in a press release. "We see LAUNCH as a great opportunity to support innovators and entrepreneurs who are helping provide sustainable solutions to today's biggest development challenges."
