Zipcar moves into downtown Portland

ZipCar Portland office grand opening with Mayor Sam Adams and Bill Scott, general manager, ZipCar.

Zipcar invested in a growing market last week when it opened an office in downtown Portland.

The office will employ six full-time and seven part-time employees and is No. 14 on the roster for the Cambridge, Mass.-based car-sharing service's regional offices.

"In the past 10 years, we have seen dramatic growth in our business here in Portland," said Zipcar general manager Bill Scott. "The city's citizens understand the benefits of car-sharing and realize that it simply doesn't make sense to own a car."

Zipcar, which allows for by-the-hour car borrowing, filed paperwork in June for an initial public offering of stock. Zipcar merged with Seattle-based Flexcar in 2007.
