Energy monitors available for library checkout in Oregon

Energy Trust of Oregon and the Oregon State Library have teamed up to offer Kill A Watt energy monitors for checkout at public libraries across the state.

The monitors, which will be borrowed and returned just like a book or a movie, provide a quick and easy way to measure the energy usage of household appliances. The thinking behind the program is that once consumers know how much power is being consumed, they can make better decisions to improve energy efficiency.

"Using these energy monitors can be eye opening and is a great way to learn where household energy costs can be trimmed," said Marshall Johnson, residential sector manager, Energy Trust in a press release.

For example, a turned-off television can still suck electricity and older appliances are more likely to be electricity hogs than new ones.

A total of 54 Oregon libraries now have Kill A Watt monitors available at 110 branch locations, including all 19 branches of the Multnomah County Library
