PNNL lands $3.1M for biofuels research

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory received a U.S. Department of Energy grant of up to $3.1 million to further test and develop a process of turning biomass into liquid transportation fuels.

PNNL will use the funds to continue a collaboration with Albemarle Corporation (NYSE: ALB) and UOP LLC, a Honeywell Company (NYSE: HON), in a three-year project to develop better way to use pyrolysis โ€” a high-heat, oxygen-free process โ€” to produce hydrocarbon fuels that are interchangeable with gasoline, diesel or jet fuels.

"This money allows us to finish the job," said Doug Elliott, laboratory fellow at PNNL. "It helps us move it out of the lab and into the real world."
