SolarCity grows in Portland

SolarCity has moved into new Portland offices and warehouse space by the airport with room to grow its staff of 22 employees.

The solar installer, which first dipped its toes into the Oregon market in 2008 and deepened its roots in 2009, averages between 40 and 50 residential installs per month.

Foster City, Calif.-based SolarCity participated in Solarize Northeast, Portland's group solar purchase program and partnered with Beaverton and Salem on similar programs.

Rob LaVigne, regional director for SolarCity, said the city partnerships have been good for bringing customers to the company.

"Each one is a separate RFP process," he said. "We made our selections and put our best foot forward."

SolarCity has five crews operating in the region and LaVigne expects to add two to three more in the coming quarter.

SolarCity offers financing for solar installations through power purchase agreements in which homeowners host the panels on the roof and then pay for the electricity it generates.

The company declines to release revenue figures, but SolarCity hauled in $21.5 million in venture capital in July and has spent the year in growth mode. Earlier this month, SolarCity inked a deal to install solar on up to 30 Wal-Mart stores.
