Ann Widmer, sustainability chairman for Widmer Brothers Brewing Company and a professor in Concordia University's MBA program, takes a decidedly academic approach to the Portland beer company's efforts to reduce its impact.
That is, if you can't prove it, you can't say it.
Metrics are vitally important to Widmer, who recently led the company's six-month effort to achieve the Climate Champion designation from the City of Portland's Best Business Center, one of 14 Portland businesses to earn the title this year.
Widmer Brothers, which signed on as an early customer of the Bonneville Environmental Foundation's nascent Water Restoration Certificate program, is a part of the Craft Brewers Alliance Inc., a publicly traded company that was formed when Widmer merged with Redhook Ale Brewery in 2008.
Ann Widmer said the Portland brewer's sustainability efforts โ which touch everything from energy efficiency to water use to transportation โ are starting to be disseminated throughout the larger company.
Widmer will be speaking at the GoGreen '10 Conference on October 5th. We caught up with her to learn more. Here's what we came away with:
