Glumac to open Corvallis office as engineer bait

With one eye on a looming global shortage and another on a growing green data center business, consulting engineering firm Glumac is planning to open a "storefront" office in Corvallis.
The office will be across Monroe Street from Oregon State University's School of Engineering.
It will serve as a proving ground for engineering students, and a potential launch pad for San Francisco-based Glumac's other West Coast locations.
Steven Straus, Glumac's Portland-based president, cites figures that indicate that by 2015, there will be a 50 percent deficiency in new engineering talent. A report out from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization points out that climate change, economic troubles and third-world development contribute to a growing need for engineers, even while the supply is diminishing.
And for a company such as Glumac, which Straus said is hiring, such shortages are a threat to the bottom line. But the company's focus on sustainability, in place as a company-wide mandate since 2001, also makes it an attractive place to work for young engineers.
"We're like rock stars down there," Straus said of Corvallis.
The Corvallis Glumac office will also be home to Sam Graves, who was hired from Hewlett Packard by the company as a mechanical associate principal to lead work on green data center projects. Graves is leading energy-efficient data center work for Oracle and Intel in California and BendBroadband in central Oregon.
It's a fitting location for Glumac, which plans to open the office sometime in January, as the engineering firm worked with Yost Grube Hall Architects to design the Kelly Engineering Center which opened at OSU in 2005 and was the first engineering school building to earn a Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design (LEED).
Glumac, which has been tapped to provide engineering work on the Vestas headquarters project in the Pearl District, has 65 employees in Portland. The company is on track to bring in about $35 million in revenue this year.
