Nike sustainability website makes waves

Nike this week launched a new corporate responsibility website, which is attracting attention from both the sustainability and Web-geek camps.

The eye-popping website, Nike Better World, is the work of design gurus Ian Coyle and Duane King along with Portland-based Wieden + Kennedy. It highlights the athletic giant's green programs such as its development and use of environmentally benign rubber, its jerseys fashioned with polyester made out of discarded plastic bottles and its low-impact shoeboxes.

Sustainability advocates laud Nike for shining a light on its efforts and goals, encouraging customers to hold them accountable. The site also includes an invitation to give feedback and keep up to date via email, Twitter and Facebook.

Techies meanwhile are excited about the site's use of new HTML5 technology, its shunning of Flash and its groovy design.

Mediapost reports that W+K came up with the idea for the site, which is designed to show how sports makes the world a better place without being too preachy.
