Fred Meyer Jewelers is the second retailer in the world to receive certification from the Responsible Jewellery Council.

Fred Meyer Jewelers Inc. announced Tuesday that it has been certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council indicating the company is following best practices to address ethical, human rights, social and environmental concerns.

Fred Meyer Jewelers, which also operates under the name Littman Jewelers, is only the second retailer in the world to receive the certification.

The Responsible Jewellery Council's stated mission is advancing "responsible ethical, social and environmental practices" throughout the diamond and gold jewellery supply chain, "from mine to retail."

The London-based council uses a third-party auditor, Specialized Technology Resources Inc., to accredit companies under its system.

Fred Meyer Jewelers is the third-largest fine jewelry retailer in the United States and the first U.S.-only retailer to be certified through the council. French jeweler Cartier was certified as the first retailer last November.

Peter Engel, president of Fred Meyer Jewelers and Littman Jewelers said in a statement, "Safeguarding consumer confidence in jewelry products in the United States and worldwide ensures the continued success of our entire industry."

Fred Meyer Jewelers worked with its suppliers to successfully complete the audit. Engel gave particular recognition to Sean Murray, the organization's sustainable supply chain specialist and Chris Coleman, director of central memo, reclamation and diamond room.

Fred Meyer Jewelers is a wholly owned subsidiary of Portland-based Fred Meyer Stores Inc., which was acquired in 1999 by The Kroger Co.
