Vestas introduces low-wind turbine

A Vestas executive in Colorado pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges.

Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas on Monday introduced a 2-megawatt turbine with 100-meter-long blades for the North American wind farm market.

The V100-2.0 MW turbine, called the 2 MW GridStreamer, is aimed at locations that have low to moderate wind speeds, defined as winds blowing between 14.5 miles and 19 miles per hour. The turbine "provides significantly higher energy production, integral grid compliance and a competitive cost of energy for the North American market," the company said in an announcement.

Portland-based Vestas’ Colorado factories will build the new model, when orders are signed, company spokesman Andrew Longeteig said via email.

Marketing for the 2 MW GridStreamer, an effort based out of Portland, is just starting; the first installations and deliveries are expected to begin in 2012, Vestas said.
