GreenWood Tree Farm Fund signed on to supply feedstock from its poplar farms to the ZeaChem biorefinery.
ZeaChem Inc., the Colorado company that is building a biorefinery in Boardman, announced Tuesday that it has signed a long-term agreement with GreenWood Tree Farm Fund, an investment fund sponsored by Portland-based GreenWood Resources, to supply woody biomass to the operation.
GreenWood was already lined up to supply the Boardman facility's 250,000 gallons-per-year biofuels demonstration refinery that is under construction and should be operational by the end of the year. GreenWood will supply biomass from its hybrid poplar tree farms located near Boardman.
The new agreement puts GreenWood in pole position if ZeaChem carries on with a plan to build a full-scale biorefinery capable of producing 25 million gallons of biofuels.
ZeaChem officials said the commercial-scale refinery could also locate in Boardman, where the company has an option on a lease of land next to the demonstration facility. But an official announcement has not been made.
GreenWood Resources CEO Jeff Nuss said his company, which has biomass-related projects around the world including supplies for combined heat and power biomass plants in South America and Europe, is always looking for new partners to develop uses for its fast-growing sustainable tree farms.
"What we're doing with ZeaChem, we see the opportunity to replicate it in other regions," Nuss said.
GreenWood Resources has also been contracted to provide feedstock to Portland General Electric for biomass tests at the Boardman coal plant.
ZeaChem boasts a highly efficient process for producing advanced biofueld and bio-chemicals using the GreenWood's woody biomass combined with fiber from local agriculture residue.
