The Green Sports Alliance just doubled its national footprint with inclusion of AEG as a founding partner.

The Green Sports Alliance landed a whale Thursday morning, announcing that AEG, a sports events giant with a portfolio of more than 50 facilities, will join the new nonprofit — effectively doubling its footprint in the sports world.

AEG, a subsidiary of the Anschutz Company, brings with it Portland's Rose Garden, the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the Best Buy Theater at Times Square in New York, the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai, China and many others.

AEG will join the Portland-based Green Sports Alliance, which is hosting its first Green Sports Summit next week in Portland, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the environmental performance of sports teams and facilities.

AEG's 1EARTH program will become a founding partner of the alliance, a move lauded by industry players.

"As the largest operator of arenas and stadiums, and one of the most environmentally intelligent businesses in the field, AEG's partnership with the Green Sports Alliance can cause a 'green' ripple effect of enormous proportions," said Allen Hershkowitz, senior scientist and director of the National Resources Defense Council's Sports Greening Initiative, in a statement.

Formally launched just five months ago, the Green Sports Alliance, which has already attracted more than 45 sports teams and venues, doubled its size with AEG's membership.

"Adding AEG's vast network of facilities and the experience it brings from its environmental initiatives will go a long way toward increasing the impact of our alliance, and allow us to learn from one another," said Martin Tull, Green Sports Alliance executive director.

Curious about the Green Sports Alliance? It's not too late to join us Thursday evening from 5 - 7 p.m. for the Sustainable Business Oregon Network featuring Martin Tull and the Green Sports Alliance.
