Gov. John Kitzhaber declared the week of July 31 - August 6 as Oregon Wave Week, providing a bureaucratic nod to the sixth annual Ocean Renewable Energy Conference, which takes place Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
Oregon's wave energy industry has seen its tide rise in recent months, with the first buoy set to be deployed off the coast of Reedsport by Ocean Power Technologies within months and Oregon's expertise in wave energy is starting to attract the attention of startups from elsewhere in the country.
In April, the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center selected a dedicated offshore test site for wave energy technology just north of Yaquina Head.
The Oregon Wave Energy Trust, created in 2007 by the Oregon Innovation Council, hosts the conference every year to continue to push the wave energy agenda. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Portland, will deliver a keynote address Wednesday morning.
