Oregon Heath & Science University announced this week that its Center for Health & Healing building in the South Waterfront development received a second Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The center was recognized by the council for Platinum-level excellence in its LEED for Existing Building Operations and Maintenance category.
The 16-story building is one of the largest LEED Platinum facilities in the nation and was the first medical facility to receive a Platinum LEED award for new construction when it was completed in 2007.
OHSU and CB Richard Ellis worked with Brightworks, a Portland sustainability consulting firm, to establish an ongoing sustainability program and and efficient operational practices to land the LEED for existing buildings designation.
Among the attributes tracked by the U.S. Green Building Council were:
- Verified energy savings
- Water efficiency
- CO2 emissions reduction
- Indoor environmental quality
- Tenant modes of transportation
- Recycling and resource conservation
The center boasts saving 5 million gallons of drinkable water annually by capturing rainwater and reusing building process water for uses including irrigation and toilet flushing.
The center won the "Outstanding Building of the Year" award last year from Building Owners and Managers Association International.
