PNNL teams win DOE honor award

Secretary Stephen Chu presented special awards to researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
Three teams of researchers from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory received special Honor Awards from Energy Secretary Steven Chu Thursday for their service to the Department of Energy.
"The employees recognized today have gone above and beyond the call of duty, demonstrating an exceptional commitment to public service," said Secretary Chu in a press release. "Their dedication, knowledge and skills have served to strengthen our nation's economic and energy security and the work of the Energy Department."
The research teams were recognized for the following work:
- A quick-response estimation of the rate of oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico during the Deepwater Horizong oil spill.
- Technical analysis and decision support provided to U.S. and Japense officials following the earthquake and tsunami that damaged the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant.
- Work between 1998 and 2010 on the disposal of spent nuclear fuel from Kzakhstan.
