Brammo Inc. stretched its reach to Asia Tuesday announcing that the government of Hong Kong will use the company's electric motorcycles in its fleet.
The electric bikes will replace gas-powered motorcycles used by the Hong Kong Police Force and other departments.
Ashland-based Brammo is touting the announcement as a milestone in the adoption of electric vehicles by governments.
"We were confident that we would lead this change and we are delighted that we have started here in Hong Kong with some of the most EV-engaged leaders in the world," said Craig Bramscher, CEO and founder of Brammo, in a press release.
The announcement follows news last week of Brammo's $28 million series B financing round, led by Polaris Industries Inc.
Brammo's Enertia Plus motorcycles, including the specialized Enertia Plus LE (for law enforcement) which sports special features for patrol use, will play a central role in the contract. The vehicles will be supplied through an exclusive dealer in Hong Kong, JCAM Advanced Mobility Company Ltd.
Last year, Lux Research predicted that the global market for two-wheeled electric vehicles would grow to $14.5 billion by 2015. Much of the demand is expected to come from Asia.
