Portland's Hawthorne District youth hostel was the only one in the U.S. to make the 10 best eco-friendly list.
The Portland Youth Hostel on Hawthorne Boulevard was named one of the 10 most eco-friendly hostels in the world and is the only one in the U.S. to make the cut.
Gadling, the AOL travel blog, published the list of the hostels with the best sustainability credentials earlier this month.
The list praised the Hawthorne District hostel for its ecoroof, its use of green cleaning products and the fact that it offers a $5 discount to guests who arrive by bicycle. The hostel was among the pioneers of the City of Portland's ecoroof program.
Other hostels on the Gadling list include:
- Auberge Alternative due Vieux-Montréal in Canada
- Mellow Eco Hostel in Barcelona
- An eco-hostel in Grampians, Australia
- The Rekjavik City Hostel in Iceland
- Eco Hostel Polermo in Buenas Aires
- The Strawberry Fields Ecolodge in Ehtiopia
- The Green Hostel in Montevideo Uruguay
- Gyreum Ecolodge in Ireland
- Enigmata Treehouse Ecolodge in Philippines
