United Streetcar's Brown named 'champion' by the White House

Chandra Brown, president of United Street Car and vice president of its parent company, Oregon Iron Works, will be recognized this week by the President Barack Obama through the White House's "Champions of Change" program.
Brown was recognized as part of a class of entrepreneurs who are making a difference in the U.S. manufacturing picture.
"These are the leaders this country needs, people who are working to build it in America and create jobs in America," the White House website reads.
Brown's credentials include her role at the helm of United Streetcar which was created to build green transportation options for U.S. cities instead of imports.
"United Streetcar was formed to build the first modern streetcars manufactured in the United States in over 59 years," Brown wrote in a blog post for the White House "Champions" blog.
The White House bio also cites Oregon Iron Works work with renewable energy companies. The Clackamas company is building wave buoys for Ocean Power Technologies.
Brown also serves on the Oregon Business Development Commission which advises the state economic development department.
Brown follows Deborah Kane, who was named a "champion" in June for her work on the Ecotrust-based FoodHub program and its effectiveness in connecting rural farmers with urban markets.
