After debuting last month at the Portland International Auto Show, Boxx Corp. is catching the attention of the tech world with a new take on electric transportation.

Founded by designer and engineer Eric Vaughn, Portland-based Boxx has developed — and thoroughly patented — a new kind of battery powered scooter that has more in common with the latest computer gadget than it does with your typical two-wheeled vehicle.

"I had some rules when I put this thing together," said Vaughn, a former Ziba Design engineer who worked with some of the region's electric vehicle and renewable energy startups before starting Boxx. "It couldn't be more complex than what it's intended to replace and it had to come out at an existing price point."

The result, after two years of development backed by private investors is what Boxx calls the 1-meter vehicle, an all-electric, all-wheel drive designed to go anywhere a moped can go but in a sturdier format. Priced at $3,995 (you can pay extra for a heated seat), it's not exactly cheap, but Vaughn claims it's the cheapest all-electric road-worthy vehicle you can buy. And unlike an electric motorcycle, you don't need a special license to ride it.

Boasting storage and comfortable ergonomics, the Boxx is computer run, weighs in at just 120 pounds and runs fluids-free. That means that the Boxx can be delivered to doorsteps like any other gadget and be stored inside. Its range is 40 to 80 miles depending on the battery (see specs here).

Since debuting two weeks ago, Boxx has received eight orders, paid in full, and a massive amount of interest, fueled in part by stories in the likes of Mashable and Wired.
