The biofuels hub site in Northwest Portland will include a distribution terminal, manufacturing operations and a cooking oil recycling facility.
Three companies will co-locate in the Northwest Industrial District in Portland to manufacture and distribute biofuels made from sources including recycled cooking oil.
Whole Energy Fuels Corp. of Bellingham, Wash., announced Tuesday it would set up a new distribution facility in Portland.
The company will be joined in the building at the corner of Northwest 28th Avenue and Industrial Street with Oregon Oils, a cooking oil recycling operation, and Beaver Biodiesel LLC, a biofuels manufacturer that will move its operations from Albany to Portland.
"This will be a vertically integrated biofuels facility," said Daniel Shafer, principal manager of Beaver Biodiesel. "It will allow us to reduce the total CO2 impact of producing and distributing biofuels."
Beaver Biodiesel is an experienced biofuels manufacturer with a production capacity of 1.2 million gallons of biofuel per year. Last year, the company worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to use high-grade camelina oil from Oregon growers to use in biofuel production.
Shafer has been working with the Portland Development Commission to establish the biofuel hub in Portland. He said he figures the move will create about 21 new jobs in the area between the three companies.
"This project presents an exciting opportunity for the city of Portland and other regional fleets to access locally made biodiesel right in the heart of Northwest Portland," said Atul Deshmane, president of Whole Energy Fuels Corp., in a press release.
Beaver Biodiesel and Whole Energy Fuels joined Oregon Oils in the building as tenants starting April 1. Oregon Oils collects used cooking oil from about 1,200 Portland-area customers, mostly restaurants. The company was formed in 1992 and has about 14 employees.
