NuScale builds on S.C. partnership

NuScale CEO Paul Lorenzini said the partnership with NuHub is a vote of confidence in his company's small modular nuclear reactor design.
NuScale Power LLC added an economic development partnership to its work to build a small modular nuclear reactor at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.
NuHub, an initiative by a public-private economic development group to promote the development of nuclear technology in the Columbia region of South Carolina, will help NuScale integrate with local utilities, a requirement of the design certification for its reactor with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
NuHub will also help NuScale go after an award under the Department of Energy's $452 million cost-sharing program for small modular reactor development and licensing.
In March, Corvallis-based NuScale announced it will work with the DOE’s Savannah River National Laboratory is intended to help provide a framework for developing land use agreements for siting the small nuclear reactors on federally owned land.
"This is another piece in the puzzle for how we move forward with a project in South Carolina," said Bruce Landrey, NuScale's vice president.
Officials said Wednesday that NuScale had helped identify several spots on the Savannah River Site that would be good candidates for a small reactor.
South Carolina as a state is well suited for new nuclear technology development as the state already receives much of its power from nuclear plants. The small modular reactors are seen as promising because they are safer and more scalable than traditional reactors.
"Our ability to join forces with NuHub is a dramatic demonstration of the market interest in NuScale's technology," said Paul Lorenzini, CEO and president, in a press release.
