Tony Arnerich and Arnerich Messina started studying sustainable investing in 2007 and by 2009 became convinced that an investment strategy based on sustainable principles would result in a portfolio that performed as well — or better — than a more traditional investment portfolio. In addition to advising deep-pocketed clients to put their money to work in sustainable investing, he oversees the firm’s strategic direction.
When the folks behind the Benefit Corporation initiative set out to create a model for a new kind of company creation, where did they look for inspiration? Oregon-born companies including Upstream 21 and Nau Inc.
Innovation around business models, financing mechanisms and socially minded entrepreneurship is making the state a center for the sustainable economy. While the rest of the country may take Oregon ideas and do them bigger and louder, the state is an incubator for many new ideas about how to build an economy that works on multiple levels.
