Oregonians took delivery of 20 cute, made-in-America electric vehicles this week from Think North America.

The Think City cars, two-door all-electric hatchbacks that boast a 100-mile range and 70 miles per hour top speed, gathered Thursday on Portland State University's Electric Avenue.

Think has a long and somewhat sordid history. The Norwegian parent company filed for bankruptcy protection no fewer than four times, most recently in 2011 after setting up a U.S. production facility in Elkhart, Ind. The company's assets were then purchased by a Russian investor and reorganized under the parent company Electric Mobility Solutions AS.

Just 300 Think City cars were produced in 2012. They are being deployed in test markets including Portland, New Jersey, the area of Indiana around the plant and in California.

Before settling on Indiana as the manufacturing site, Think had been in touch with economic development officials in Oregon about basing manufacturing on Swan Island in Portland.

"We kept in touch with those folks," Charlie Allcock, Portland General Electric's economic development director and an electric car champion.

Allcock said when Think was ready to roll out its 2012 Think City, they wanted to do it Portland.

"They said, "You guys have the market,'" Allcock said.
