Bamboo Sushi brings sustainable seafood to NW 23rd

Bamboo Sushi opened it's second location on Northwest 23rd Avenue this week.
Roughly four years after opening its doors on Southeast 28th Avenue, Bamboo Sushi has brought its sustainably harvested seafood to Portland’s west side and is preparing for further expansion in California.
The restaurant opened its second location this week, Bamboo Sushi Northwest at 836 N.W. 23rd Ave. The space reflects the same environmental friendliness that defines its menu options.
The building itself is turning 101 years old and used to be a theater. In keeping with the essence of the building’s history, ceilings get higher toward the back of the restaurant. The building has all LED lighting, with less than 300 watts powering the place. The restaurant’s bar is made from reclaimed, old growth white oak.
The south wall in the dining room displays a life-size mural of the food chain of the tiger shark, native to the Berry Islands Marien Preserve in the Bahamas, which Bamboo Sushi has been working to help protect.
In addition, the building features an 18-post bike parking center in front of the building, one of only two on Northwest 23rd Avenue.
“We hope to be able to improve with each place we open,” said Brandon Hill, director of operations at Bamboo Sushi.
Fans of the menu of Bamboo's southeast location will be able to find all their favorites at the new restaurant, too.
Bamboo Sushi, founded by CEO Kristofor Lofgren in 2008, is one of 33 registered Benefit Corporations in Oregon and was named the "most sustainable restaurant in the U.S." by the influential food blog Food Republic.
Bamboo Sushi is the first independent restaurant in the U.S. to be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, reflecting the operation’s dedication to sourcing and serving sustainable seafood. The restaurant also partners with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Blue Ocean Institute, Salmon Nation, KidSafe Seafood and the Green Restaurant Association.
