Maple XO and Grove partner on recycled iPhone cases

Two Portland-based design shops teamed up to release this week an eye-catching iPhone case made from recycled skateboard material.
Grove, the Portland company known for their custom engraved bamboo iPhone cases, and Maple XO which specializes in making jewelry from skateboard waste, joined up to produce a beautiful piece of recycled, high-tech chic.
The SkateBacks, as they're called, are made in Grove's Portland workshop from waste coming out of the PS Stix skateboard factory in Mexico.
The covers adhere the back of an iPhone 4 or 4s with a peel and stick adhesive.
Lindsay Jo Holmes, owner of Maple XO, said that while she started making jewelry from recycled skateboards, she quickly realized that leftover materials from skateboard manufacturing presented a larger opportunity.
"To help reduce the environmental footprint of skateboarding, we needed to figure out a way to use this industrial waste," Holmes said.
Maple XO is working on other uses for the material in addition to the iPhone cases.
