Nicky USA acquires organic farm in Aurora

Portland meat distributor Nicky USA Inc. on Wednesday announced plans to raise its own meat after acquiring a 31-acre farm in Aurora.

The company said the new farm, located along the Pudding River, will be used to raise rabbits, game birds and other "unique animals" using humane and sustainable practices. The farm is currently home to wild geese, quail, a century-old farm house and a barn the company said bears a resemblance to the one in its corporate logo.

The move brings owner Geoff Latham back to his roots as a farmer and establishes Nicky USA as the only meat distributor and butcher in the Northwest that also raises meat. The first product of the farm will be rabbit, which Latham first began selling back in 1991, a product that helped the company develop relationships with Portland chefs.

“I am lucky to have established my business in a place with some of the nation’s best chefs and locavores who are excited about locally grown high quality protein. Because of them I am now able to fulfill my life-long dream of growing my own meat on my own farm,” Latham said in a news release.

Nicky USA will also use the farm host chefs and others for farm dinners, hunting trips, boating on the river and property tours in an effort or strengthening the connection between the farms and Northwest tables.
