Electric motorcycle riders: start your engines.

Ashland-based Brammo Inc,’s electric motorcycles have gained entry into the American Federation of Motorcyclists. The Modesto, Calif.-based Federation will allow three types of Brammo’s bikes to be driven during sanctioned races.

Those riding Brammo’s Empulse R, Empulse TTX and Empulse RR can now enter Federation races and compete for points and championship positions starting with the 2013 season.

It’ll be intriguing to watch how the bikes fare against their gas-powered counterparts.

"It's going to be a challenge to be competitive as the gas bikes have about 100 years of development time on us, but we're excited about the chance to pit the Brammo Empulse against the best efforts from Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha,” said Brian Wismann, Brammo’s product development director, in a statement.

Brammo had sought to compete in the Federation’s normal race instead of seeking a separate electric class. The idea is to show whether the electric bikes can go head-to-head with the mainstream manufacturers, said Berto Wooldridge, president of AFM Racing.
