Mean, green and LeanPath: Food waste tracker set for Q4 rollout

LeanPath Inc.'s tracker allows users to record the amount of food their kitchens waste, which could help them cut their losses.
A Portland company has developed the second version of its tracking system the restaurant operators can use to track food waste.
LeanPath Inc. rolled out the LeanPath Tracker earlier this month at the National Restaurant Association show in Chicago. The item allows restaurants and food service outlets to record all pre-consumer food waste from overproduction, expiration, spoiled items and trimmings.
The system depends on a tracker, being released in this year’s fourth quarter, that has a 10” touch-screen interface connected to a scale and camera.
The data captured at the tracking station is wirelessly transmitted to LeanPath Online, a cloud-based data warehouse. From there, the data indicates where facilities can eventually slash waste. Managers can have text alerts sent to them when waste levels soar past certain levels.
“For example you can set it up to send a text to the executive chef anytime something valued at more than $20 is thrown out,” said Janet Haugan, LeanPath’s marketing manager.
Along with restaurants, the company is marketing the trackers to such food service segments as hotels, colleges, hospitals, corporate dining facilities, contract management, casinos, military installations, schools, grocery stores and senior living facilities. The company has more than 150 food service accounts in 48 states.
