The Hillsboro Hops, which play their first home game June 17, are a member of the Green Sports Alliance.
The Portland-based Green Sports Alliance’s leaders revealed this month they’ve added 40 new teams and venues as members.
The Alliance’s reach is now so strong that it’s hosting its third annual summit on the East Coast, at which where many of its newest members are based. The Summit takes place Aug. 26-28 in New York.
The newest teams and venues include Major League Soccer (MLS), Madison Square Garden, the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia’s MetLife Stadium and Ohio State University.
Nearly two-thirds of all Major League Baseball teams are now Alliance members as are half of the National Hockey League teams and one-third of the NBA teams.
“We’re proud to see the great strides made by many teams and venues to integrate sustainable practices into their operations and events,” said Scott Jenkins, the Green Sports Alliance’s chairman and vice president of ballpark operations for the Seattle Mariners. “As a catalyst for the sports greening movement, we look forward to continuing to grow as an organization to provide valuable member resources and industry support.”
The Alliance also announced it has added three new directors to its board. Joe Abernathy represents baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals while Jennifer Regan is the global sustainability director for AEG. The third new member is Stephen Ashkin, executive director of the Green Cleaning Network.
The Green Sports Alliance nonprofit aims to help sports teams, venues and leagues enhance their environmental performance. Locally, their members include the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, MLS’ Portland Timbers and the new Hillsboro Hops Single-A baseball team.
