John Audley tapped to head Sustainable Northwest

John Audley's broad experience has led him to assume roles at the international, state and hyper-local levels. He takes over from Martin Goebel at Sustainable Northwest on July 16.
Sustainable Northwest’s new director will take the same approach to advocacy, whether he’s appearing on an international stage or meeting with Eastern Oregon biomass interests.
Such flexibility could serve John Audley well as he takes over for Martin Goebel, the group’s founder. Audley, a policy and planning administrator with Oregon’s Department of Energy, will assume Sustainable Northwest’s top spot on July 16.
“I’ve spent a fair amount of time working in the international environment, but in the last seven years, I’ve focused my work here in the Northwest,” said Audley. “Whether you’re before the European Parliament or before the Harney County (Oregon) Commission, it’s about building trust and bringing sustainable solutions that help communities.”
Sustainable Northwest’s board voted unanimously to hire Audley to replace Goebel, who announced his departure in February.
Sustainable Northwest reported $1.2 million in assets during its 2012 fiscal year.
Audley earned notice for his environment and energy policy acumen, along with his ability to build consensus among different groups, said Jane O’Keeffe, the group’s Northwest Board Chair.
Along with his Energy department tenure, Audley has worked in Washington, D.C. and Brussels, Belgium on state, national, and international environmental and economic issues. He’s spent time at the National Wildlife Federation as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
He eventually moved west and became government relations liaison for The Nature Conservancy Oregon chapter and deputy director of the Renewable Northwest Project.
