Travel Portland gets the green light for green meetings

Oregon’s own Travel Portland has become just the second destination marketing group to meet an intriguing, if clunky-named, new international sustainability standard.
Travel Portland achieved “Level One certification” with the new ASTM International standard that measures “Evaluation and Selection of Destinations for Environmentally Sustainable Meetings, Events, Trade Shows, and Conferences.” The standard aims to provide event planners and suppliers with specs for producing sustainably driven events.
The industry standards were created in partnership with ASTM International, formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials, which is an American National Standards Institute-accredited standards development group.
“Achieving this certification is confirmation of Portland’s commitment to sustainability and gives meeting planners one more reason to choose Portland as their next meeting destination,” said Jeff Miller, Travel Portland’s president and CEO, in a release.
The destination standard helps travel groups measure categories related to staff management, communications, waste management, energy, air quality, water, procurement and community partners.
