Recycling industry creates jobs, coaxes economic gains

A new study suggests that the recycling industry generates $87 billion in yearly economic impacts and is responsible for about 500,000 jobs.
The Washington, D.C.-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries commissioned the John Dunham and Associates study to determine the industry's size and scope. The study revealed:
The industry is responsible for 462,780 direct and indirect jobs in the U.S.
- Nearly 138,000 of those direct jobs pay an average of $69,475 in wages and benefits.
- The industry generates about $4 billion in state and local revenue yearly
- Recycling industry companies also pay $6.3 billion in federal taxes.
ISRI tracks data from the iron and steel, tire-making, glass, paper, plastic, textiles and electronics industries.
