In looking for a way to honor this year’s Innovation in Sustainability Award winners, we decided to ask the honorees who they, themselves, respect.

New Seasons Market’s CEO Wendie Collie told us her role model is Howard Behar, former president of Starbucks Corp.

“He believes that if you dedicate yourself to enriching the lives of individuals, you can positively impact businesses and communities,” Collie said. “Howard’s belief was that being of service to others helps people realize their greatest potential, and that is what leadership is about. He taught me to ask for help, make learning from others a way of being, and to ‘get my hands in the dirt’ to ensure I stayed grounded as a leader."

There was also Holst Architecture’s partners John T. Holmes and Jeffrey Stuhr, who tossed out the names of San Francisco architect Jim Jennings and Portland architecture icons as their own role models.

“(Jennings) had a significant influence on me when I worked for him out of school. I was able to get hands-on experience in a small studio that was doing really good work.,” said (John). “As far as from a local perspective, two names stand out – Pietro Belluschi and John Yeon. Belluschi for his stylistic reinterpretations of classical buildings, distilling it down to simple forms and details. And John Yeon for his sensitivity to the environment and placemaking.”

Today's SBO Innovation in Sustainability Awards ceremony delivered many new heroes into the fold. Which makes sense because those within sustainability circles have always drawn on inspiration from their heroes. Our Innovation in Sustainability Awards program is in its fifth year, and, at today's gathering in downtown Portland, we honored leading lights in the categories of energy, equity, food, natural environment, transportation, waste and water.

We're going to roll out our full coverage on the SBO Awards early next week. In the meantime, click on the photo above for a look at the honorees we lauded, as well as the bustling networkers who hobnobbed, at today's ceremony.
