Sustainable Alpha features shared conversations with the best minds, portfolio managers and industry leaders working to maximize returns while prioritizing the environment, social and governance factors — what’s become short-handed in the industry as ESG. Sustainable Alpha will highlight portfolio approaches and investment trends against the backdrop of broader themes such as resource constraints, policy changes and demographic shifts — all while shedding light on how ESG can impact your investments.
Sustainable Alpha conversations are led by John Wrenn, Senior VP, Investments for UBS. The Wrenn Ferguson Group has a combined experience of 200 years managing over 1.6 billion in assets, offering customized wealth management strategies for individuals, endowments and foundations. John Wrenn: How do you view the evolution of mission-based investing?
Craig Muska: Evolution of mission-related investing is being driven by both supply and demand. Investment strategies are being developed to meet the needs of investors who are seeking to align their portfolios with their missions. The practice of mission-based investing is transitioning from what was historically an exclusionary investment approach to one where sustainability criteria are integrated as part of the valuation process. At the same time, recent financial markets have forced many foundations to take a more cautious approach to mission-related investing which has slowed the development of many nascent mission-based strategies.
JW: How are foundations in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest helping to lead the sustainable investment space?
Craig Muska is an investment adviser for Threshold Group, an advisory firm with $2.7 billion in client assets and offices in Portland, Gig Harbor, Wash. and New York.
